Holographic Video

For one of the final projects of this year, we created a "Holographic Video," similar to the Star Wars scene where R2D2 projects a hologram of Princess Leia.

To begin, I used a stock video of a salesperson, "Susie," (Set an in and out point) and  cut her out of the clip, careful to get every body part throughout the episode.  Then I removed her green background in order to simply work with the person.  I did this using "Keylight," selecting the same color green and therefore removing it from the clip.  Finally, I choked out her edges in order to take out any remaining background, and blurred her clip to make it slightly fuzzy.

Then I started to add desired effects such as grey solids (in order to create faded bars going up and down through the footage) and noise to create a "sparse" connection.  I also dealt with color of the footage (changing it to blue) and opacity levels in order to create a more realistic scenario to what happened in Star Wars.

In order to animate the gray bars, I went frame by frame for the first three, setting an opacity pattern. Then, I was able to duplicate the effect throughout the entire footage.  This made the bars 'flicker.'

Of course, Susie wasn't the clip I wanted, so to customize I filmed myself saying an intro to introduce my Wix Site.  I chose to hold a lightsaber and include a quote from Yoda to keep with the Star Wars Theme.

All I needed to do at that point was replace the Susie footage with my own, the effects were already in place!  To create an added 'old projector' type feel, I created another solid and cut it out around the projection.  Then I set the opacity levels to turn on and off to create that classic flickering.  The video was finished in Premiere with the original audio, and the Star Wars Cantina Song.
