Lego Project

Completed Pieces: 1x2, 1x2 brick, Tire

The main goal of the Lego Project was to have each student in the class model 3-5 legos each in order to create an entire set; for us, it was a dump truck.  My finished pieces were the 1x2, the 1x2 brick, and the tire(s).

To begin the 1x2, I created a 2D version of the piece on AutoCad, using class decided measurements and other measurements that I took myself.  Then, I imported the skeletal layers into 3Ds Max and began to extrude the layers to the decided measurements.  Then, I "Booleaned" the solid parts I needed hollowed or removed, and connected those I needed to come together.  After that, I imported it into the MakerBot program, resized it, and printed it to perfection.

Then, I started on the 1x2 brick.  I used the same 2D Autocad Skeleton of the 1x2, importing it into 3Ds Max, and then extruded the height to the correctly taken measurements (It's the same basic structure of the 1x2 with more height).  Different than the 1x2, I added a bar in the middle to stabilize the connecting part and chamfered the edges.  After that, I imported it to MakerBot, resized it, and printed it.

The Lego tire was constructed entirely in 3Ds Max.  Starting with a tube, I resized it to fit my dimensions, and then extruded the inside to fit the lego rim piece.  Then, I added 'segments' in which I could select polygons opposite of each other and extrude to create the treads of the tire.   Finally. I imported it into the MakerBot program, resized it, and printed it on flexible filament.
